Fresh Violence Erupts in Manipur: Seven Security Personnel Injured in Gunfight

Manipur News

Amidst escalating tensions, Manipur witnessed another bout of violence, leaving seven security personnel injured in a gunfight in the border town of Moreh. The clash involved suspected insurgents, resulting in critical injuries to four police commandos and three BSF soldiers. The injured personnel have been airlifted to an Imphal hospital for urgent treatment.

Chronicle of Recent Unrest

This incident follows a violent New Year’s day in Manipur, where four individuals were shot dead, and several others sustained injuries. The aftermath prompted the reimplementation of curfew in five valley districts of the state, reflecting the precarious security situation.

Chief Minister’s Condemnation and Appeal

Chief Minister N Biren Singh, in a video message, expressed profound sadness over the loss of innocent lives. He condemned the violence and appealed to the residents of Lilong, where the incident occurred, to assist the government in identifying the culprits. The Chief Minister assured that the government would spare no effort in ensuring justice under the law.

Curfew Reimposed in Affected Districts

In response to the surge in violence, curfew has been reimposed in Thoubal, Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts. The move aims to restore order and safeguard the well-being of residents amid the volatile situation.

Ongoing Security Challenges

This incident adds to the existing security challenges in Manipur, where a separate gunfight last week resulted in four security personnel sustaining injuries while confronting suspected insurgents in Moreh.
