Fresh Violence in Manipur; confrontation Leaves 17 Injured in Bishnupur Region

Manipur Violence: In the Bishnupur region of Manipur on Thursday, there were skirmishes between the military forces and demonstrators from the Meitei minority that resulted in up to 17 injuries. The incident forced the curfew relaxations that Imphal East and Imphal West had previously announced to be rescinded. As a precaution, the limits were put in place during the day by the authorities. In order to disperse the demonstrators in the Kangvai and Phougakchao parts of the district, armed forces and the Manipur Police fired tear gas shells.

Clashes Erupt as Meitei Women Attempt to Cross Fenced Area

Details indicate that the incident occurred as the Meitei ladies attempted to cross a district fenced area. The Assam Rifles and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) stopped them, which resulted in stone-throwing and conflicts between the population and the armed forces. A sizable police force was stationed nearby in the meanwhile to stop any other violent occurrences.

Mass Protests in Bishnupur and Imphal

Since the early hours of the morning, thousands of residents of the Bishnupur area have gathered on the streets to obstruct the movement of security personnel. Following the unrest in Bishnupur, protests also broke out in Imphal, the state's capital, and police used tear gas to disperse the throng. The state's High Court on Thursday morning ordered status quo to be preserved at the intended burial site in Churachandpur district, delaying the mass burial of Kuki-Zomi people killed in Manipur's ethnic conflict by hours.
