From Building Trade Bridges Between Iran and UAE to Resolving Global Tensions, India Encounters its Diplomatic Test at the BRICS Summit

India faces a key diplomatic test at the BRICS Summit as it seeks to balance trade interests, Iran-UAE tensions and wider global conflicts.

BRICS Summit: India will soon be facing an important diplomatic challenge in the form of the BRICS Summit to be held in New Delhi from September 12 to 13. As BRICS expands, the diplomatic challenge for India will lie in striking a balance between the economic cooperation with the other member states and their rising geopolitical differences. Iran and the UAE have differing stances regarding the West Asia conflict, and it is going to be a challenge for India to find some sort of common ground between them and keep the focus of the BRICS agenda on trade, energy, and development.

India’s diplomatic challenge

The tensions in West Asia have made it hard for BRICS to reach an agreement, mainly because of the disagreements between Iran and the UAE. It is imperative for India to tread delicately in its relations with Iran, the UAE, Russia, China, and the United States.

From regional disputes to international cooperation

The summit will test whether the expanded 11-member BRICS can find common ground despite differing views. The bloc now represents more than 49.5% of the world’s population, 40% of global GDP and 26% of global trade, giving its decisions significant international influence.

Trade still plays a central role in the summit

BRICS Summit: India is looking to enhance economic cooperation through BRICS by increasing trade, enhancing the supply chain, improving cross-border payments, and collaborating in energy and technology sectors. But for India, it is a serious concern as India has a huge trade deficit of $226.1 billion with a total of $321.8 billion in imports and $95.7 billion in exports to BRICS countries.
