Over three decades, Shivakumar quietly became the most indispensable man in Congress. When Gujarat Congress MLAs needed protection during a floor test crisis in 2017, he sheltered them in Bengaluru. Tihar Jail — The Darkest Chapter
But his darkest hour came in September 2019, when the Enforcement Directorate arrested him in a money laundering case. IT raids had earlier uncovered ₹8.59 crore in unaccounted cash at his Delhi residence. After days in ED custody, he was sent to Tihar Jail, where he spent nearly 50 days. Congress President Sonia Gandhi personally visited him behind those walls — a rare gesture that underlined how deeply the party valued him. The Delhi High Court granted bail on October 23, 2019, and Shivakumar walked out with his head held high, calling the entire ordeal proof of his loyalty to Congress.
Victory in 2023 — But Still Waiting
Then came 2023 — and another test of patience. Congress swept Karnataka with 135 seats, and many expected the CM’s chair to go to Shivakumar. Instead, Siddaramaiah was named Chief Minister, with DKS accepting the Deputy CM role. He governed without complaint, managed the party as KPCC president, and when asked about his CM ambitions in late 2025, said simply: “We’ll talk about it in 2026.”
June 3, 2026 — The Wait Is Finally Over
DK Shivkumar: He was right. On May 29, 2026, Siddaramaiah resigned, embraced Shivakumar warmly, and cleared the path. DK Shivakumar will be sworn in as Karnataka’s 25th Chief Minister on June 3, 2026.
