Gauhati HC stays WFI election scheduled for July 11; Report

WFI Elections: On Sunday, The Gauhati High Court put a stay on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections which was scheduled to be held on July 11. Passing a judgement on a petition filed by the Assam Wrestling Association over non-affiliation by WFI, the election has been stalled. The petition was filed against the WFI, IOA ad-hoc body and the Sports Ministry.

The Petition contention

Assam Wrestling Association said although it was entitled to be an affiliated member of the WFI after recommendation made by the WFI Executive Committee at WFI’s General Council in Gonda, on November 15, 2014, it was not granted one. They association has contended that unless they receive affiliation and they can nominate their representative to electoral collage, the election should not be conducted.

Further proceedings

The panel had fixed June 25 as the last date for receiving the names for electoral college with elections scheduled for July 11. WFI, ad-hoc body and the Sports Ministry has been directed by court not proceed with any election process until the next date is fixed for hearing. The court has now fixed July 17 as the next date for hearing.
