Ghazipur Landfill Fire: Massive Blaze Erupts in East Delhi Dumping Ground

Firefighters Combat Flames at Ghazipur Landfill, Drawing Attention to Persistent Problems with Waste Management

On Sunday evening, a massive fire broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site, a massive pile of waste on Delhi’s eastern border. The latest event demonstrating the persistent issues with this enormous waste is the fire that firefighters are fighting.

Firefighters race to put out the fire at the Ghazipur landfill.

At 5:22 p.m., the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call regarding the fire and sent two fire tenders to the location right away. Excavators are being brought in to help control the blaze as efforts are made to put extinguish the flames.

Years of Improper Waste Management Pay Off

The Ghazipur landfill poses a serious threat, as seen by this fire. At 65 meters, the waste has reached an astounding height that is comparable to the famous Qutub Minar monument. Sadly, two people lost their lives in 2017 when a section of the dump crashed onto a nearby road. Furthermore, fires are a persistent problem; in the last two years alone, there have been four incidents, including a significant fire in March 2022 that required more than 50 hours to extinguish.
