Gujrat Assembly Election: Congress stands to gain Surat East Contest after AAP candidate withdraw nomination

Gujrat Assembly Election: After Kanchan Jariwala withdrew his nomination, the Aam Aadmi Party, which has been attempting to make headway in Gujarat, suffered a setback in Surat (East) on Wednesday.

While AAP claimed that the BJP kidnapped its nominee and forced him to withdraw, Jariwala released a video message in which he taken responsibility for his acts.

The AAP has lost the chance to run for the seat as a result of Jariwala’s withdrawal because Salim Multani, its standby candidate, would also not have his application accepted.

In accordance with the guidelines, if the first nomination is rejected, consideration is given to the second nominee’s candidacy. However, in the event of withdrawal, it is not accepted. Multani will now run as an Independent, according to a legal adviser for the AAP, as reported in The Indian Express.

Along with his supporters, irate AAP leader and deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia demonstrated outside the Election Commission office in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Why is the Surat (East) seat significant to the AAP?

Surat (East) was one of the urban districts that the AAP targeted. As the main opposition party in the 2021 municipal elections, AAP succeeded to register its presence in that seat and displace Congress. AAP may not have fared well against the BJP’s 93 seats with 28.58 percent of the vote and 27 seats, but it eliminated Congress.

The odds have improved for Congress in these state assembly elections, though, as the tables have turned. Aslam Cyclewala, a Muslim candidate for the grand old party, is now pleading with AAP officials to back him.

There are 2.12 lakh people living in the Surat (East) constituency, 92,000 of whom are Muslims. The Rana and Khatri communities are the other two major groups. Since 2007, Surat (East) has chosen a Rana candidate; this year, 15 of the 17 candidates are Muslims.

Arvindbhai Rana, who had also won the seat in 2017, has been put forth by the BJP. Congress, which stands to gain from potential polarised votes, may challenge it, though.

The Gujarat Assembly elections are slated to take place on December 1 and 5 in two parts. Voter tallies will be counted on December 8.

For the first and second stages, respectively, the final periods for withdrawal of nominations are November 17 and November 21.
