The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has approached HSIIDC to allocate 12 acres of land in Naharpur Kasan, near Manesar, to develop a new bus depot. This initiative supports GMDA’s ambitious plan to increase the city’s bus fleet to 900 within three years, including 400 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme.

Gurugram’s Bus Fleet Set to Triple as GMDA Pushes for New Depot and E-Buses

GMDA wants to make Gurugram's city bus services a lot bigger.

A bus station and terminal are needed in Naharpur Kasan, which is close to Manesar. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has asked the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) for 12 acres of land in this area. As part of the GMDA's plan to add 900 buses to the Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL) fleet over the next three years—200 of which should be added by the end of the year—this move will improve service along the busy Gurugram–Manesar route.

Why put a factory close to Manesar?

The original plan for a terminal at Bhangrola was thrown out because the narrow access roads couldn't handle the amount of bus traffic. Because Naharpur Kasan is on an important corridor, the move is meant to get rid of "dead mileage," which is the unnecessary travel of buses without passengers in the early morning and late evening, especially between Gurugram, IMT Manesar, and nearby areas.

Infrastructure now and in the future

GMCBL currently runs 200 CNG buses, 150 in Gurugram and 50 in Faridabad. These buses leave from three stations, two in Sector 10 (one of which is an extension) and one in Sector 52/53. A fourth station is being built in Sector 48, and it will be big enough for about 100 buses.

Switching to electric vehicles and adding to the fleet

As part of the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, GMDA is hoping to get 200 electric buses this year. They plan to get another 200 next year, as long as the state government agrees. Its main goal is to have 900 cars in three years, and this fits with that.

Information on land use and funds

The 12-acre area is officially "open space" and is owned by HSIIDC. An official request has been made by GMDA to change the use of land for public transport infrastructure. At the same time, the state has given 40 crore to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram to buy 7 acres of land in Sector 103 near the Dwarka Motorway for a second bus station that can also hold 100 buses.

The Sector 103 depot will be placed to serve growing areas along the Dwarka Motorway, older Gurugram areas, and even people travelling from other states to get to Delhi. It will be connected to the Sector 48 depot, which will double the capacity of that depot.

Benefits for operations and strategy

The new depot sites were chosen in a way that will cut down on unnecessary bus travel and make the service run more smoothly. This year is the target date for finishing the Sector 48 centre that is currently being built. The Sector 103 facility will follow once the land purchase is complete. On the Manesar route, the Naharpur Kasan depot fills in a major transport gap.

Gurugram is ready to handle a 900-bus fleet, including 400 electric buses, thanks to its four main depots and other improvements. National goals for sustainable transport and local needs for urban movement are met by this large expansion.

Look ahead

GMDA is working hard to finish the DPRs (detailed project reports) and land-use approvals needed to pay for and build these bases. If everything goes as planned, Gurugram's public bus service capacity will grow a lot by 2028. This will make public transport much easier to use, cut down on carbon emissions, and make it easier for people to travel.
