Understanding Dry Ice and the Risks After Gurugram Cafe Incident

Gurugram News

Gurugram News: Following the concerning incident at Laforestta Cafe in Gurugram, where five individuals suffered after consuming dry ice mistaken for mouth freshener, it’s crucial to revisit the potential dangers associated with dry ice.

Recap of the Incident

On March 2nd, a group of individuals dining at Laforestta Cafe were reportedly served dry ice instead of mouth freshener. This resulted in them experiencing burning sensations in their mouths, vomiting, and even vomiting blood. Thankfully, they received medical attention, and some required hospitalisation.

Understanding Dry Ice

Dry ice is used in several applications, including:

  • Keeping products frozen during transportation: Due to its extremely cold temperature (-78 degrees Celsius), dry ice is used to keep food and pharmaceutical products frozen during transportation.
  • Creating special effects: Dry ice is used in the entertainment industry to create special effects like fog and smoke.
  • Keeping goods moisture-free: As dry ice sublimates (turns from solid to gas) instead of melting, it keeps goods free from moisture.

What are the Dangers of Dry Ice?

While dry ice has many benefits, it is important to be aware of its dangers:

  • Cold burns and frostbite: Due to its extreme temperature, improper handling of dry ice can lead to cold burns and frostbite. Always wear gloves when handling dry ice.
  • Asphyxiation: Storing large amounts of dry ice in a small, poorly ventilated space can lead to a buildup of CO2 gas, causing asphyxiation (lack of oxygen). Symptoms of oxygen deprivation include headache, confusion, disorientation, and difficulty breathing.
  • Eye irritation: In some cases, incorrect handling of dry ice can also lead to eye irritation.

How to Stay Safe with Dry Ice?

  • Always wear personal protective equipment: When working with dry ice, wear suitable gloves and eye protection to avoid injuries.
  • Store dry ice properly: Store dry ice in a well-ventilated area and monitor CO2 levels continuously.
  • Never ingest dry ice: Dry ice should never be consumed, as it can cause serious internal injuries.

By understanding the dangers of dry ice and following safety precautions, you can avoid potential hazards and use it safely.
