In a shocking incident, Haryana Police ADGP (Additional Director General of Police) Y. Puran Kumar was found dead at his Chandigarh residence on Tuesday afternoon. According to initial reports, Kumar allegedly shot himself in the head using his gunman’s service revolver. Police have prima facie treated the case as suicide.

The incident took place in the soundproof basement of his brother-in-law’s house in Sector 11, Chandigarh. Sources said Kumar left behind a nine-page suicide note mentioning the names of certain serving and retired IPS officers. The note has been seized and will be released only after forensic verification, police officials confirmed.

Reports also indicate that a liquor businessman had recently accused Kumar of demanding a ₹2.5 lakh monthly bribe — an allegation that may be part of the ongoing investigation.

Found Dead in Soundproof Basement

Police sources revealed that Kumar went to the basement around 1 p.m. after borrowing his PSO’s service revolver, saying he had some work. As the basement was soundproof, the gunshot was not heard by anyone in the house. Around 2 p.m., Kumar’s younger daughter went downstairs and found him lying in a pool of blood on the sofa. She immediately alerted the security staff, who called the police.

Suicide Note, Revolver, and Will Recovered

Senior officials including IG Pushpendra Singh, SSP Kaur, and SP (City) Priyanka reached the spot. The forensic team collected evidence and recorded the entire process on video. Police recovered a revolver, a will, and a nine-page suicide note from the scene.

Scheduled to Take Charge at Police Training Centre

The tragedy occurred just a day before Kumar was to assume charge as head of the Police Training Centre in Sunaria (Rohtak) on Wednesday. A 2001-batch Haryana-cadre IPS officer, Puran Kumar was known for his outspoken nature and for exposing irregularities within the police system.

Known for Integrity and Outspokenness

Originally from Andhra Pradesh and belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, Kumar held a B.E. in Computer Science and was also an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad. He had previously filed cases against his own department, alleging discrimination by then DGP Manoj Yadav.

Kumar is survived by his wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, who was on an official visit to Japan at the time of the incident, and their two daughters — the elder studying abroad and the younger residing with the family in Chandigarh.

Police have launched a detailed investigation to verify the circumstances surrounding the death and the allegations mentioned in the suicide note.
