In a landmark push for energy independence and regional development, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini conducted a joint review of the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP), North India’s first nuclear power plant, being built in Gorakhpur village, Fatehabad district.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) Haryana tweeted:

“Union Power Minister Shri @mlkhattar and Chief Minister Shri @NayabSainiBJP reviewed the progress of the 'Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana' (GHAVP), the first nuclear power plant in North India, at Gorakhpur, Fatehabad.”

A Game-Changer for Energy Security

The GHAVP project, being developed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), aims to set up two Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) in the first phase, with a total capacity of 1,400 MW (2 x 700 MW). Once operational, the plant will significantly reduce the energy deficit in Haryana and nearby states, while also contributing to the national grid.

Officials noted that this project will not only enhance energy availability but also cut down carbon emissions, aligning with India’s global climate commitments. Nuclear power is considered a stable, low-carbon source of energy and offers a long-term solution to the growing power demand in Northern India.

Boost to Local Economy and Employment

The project has already led to the creation of thousands of jobs during its construction phase. Once completed, it is expected to generate permanent employment opportunities in engineering, operations, safety, and maintenance. Local vendors, contractors, and service providers have also seen a significant economic boost.

Moreover, the development of infrastructure around the plant — including roads, housing, and water facilities — is contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of Fatehabad and surrounding districts.

Strong Push from the Centre and State

Both Union Minister Khattar and CM Saini reaffirmed their commitment to speeding up the project's completion, ensuring adherence to global safety standards and timely commissioning. They praised the coordination between NPCIL and state agencies and emphasized that this project is a symbol of Haryana’s transformation into a power surplus and industrially forward state.

The Chief Minister added that the state is working to become a key player in India’s clean energy transition, and projects like GHAVP are central to that vision. He assured continued support in addressing land, infrastructure, and community concerns related to the plant.

Public Awareness and Safety Measures

To address public concerns, awareness campaigns have been held to educate local residents about the safety of nuclear energy, radiation protocols, and environmental safeguards. NPCIL officials stated that the plant will operate with state-of-the-art safety mechanisms and continuous monitoring systems in compliance with Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) guidelines.
