A BJP leader from Haryana's Sonipat, Surendra Jawahar, was shot dead by his neighbour inside a shop over a land dispute on Friday night. The accused, Monu, fired at least two bullets at the BJP leader before fleeing the scene, officials said.

The incident, which took place around 9:30 PM, was caught on CCTV. The footage shows Monu pushing Mr. Jawahar into a shop and pointing a gun at his head. In the video, Mr. Jawahar was heard shouting, "Maar diya, maar diya" (He's killed me) before being shot. Two to three people attempted to intervene, but Monu fired the shots and escaped.

According to police officials, a preliminary investigation revealed that the BJP leader had bought land from Monu’s uncle and aunt, leading to an ongoing rivalry. Monu had allegedly warned Mr. Jawahar against stepping onto the property. However, when Mr. Jawahar visited the land to resolve the issue, Monu chased and fatally shot him.

"Yesterday, we got information that a bullet was fired in Jawahra village, and Surendra Jawahar was shot and killed. The person who was killed had bought land from his uncle and aunt. They had a dispute over it, due to which this murder took place," a senior police official said, as quoted by India Today.

The BJP leader died on the spot. His body has been sent for post-mortem, and the accused was arrested on Saturday morning, officials confirmed.

Shiv Sena Leader Shot Dead in Punjab

In a separate incident in neighbouring Punjab, Shiv Sena leader Mangat Rai Manga was shot dead in Moga on Thursday night. Three armed men on a bike attacked him, initially firing at the district unit president of the outfit. The bullet missed its intended target and hit a 12-year-old boy instead.

Manga attempted to flee on a two-wheeler, but the assailants chased him down and killed him.

Both incidents have raised concerns about rising political violence in the region. Investigations are underway.
