Radhika was killed point-blank with a gunshot by her father, Deepak Yadav, at their home in Gurugram, Haryana. Deepak has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days following the incident. Deepak, it is reported, had told police during questioning that he had been agitated by the relentless teasing and hadn't slept for a fortnight. The sources further say that he had become isolated, pacing inside the house, and hadn't uttered a word to his family.

This vile act serves to underline the vast, and frequently unspoken, expectation placed upon sportspeople and their families. For most, a sporting career is not so much a labour of love; it is a vast financial and emotional gamble. Parents pool their life savings, and children bear the burden of paying that investment back in success.

The distinction between encouraging investment and suffocating expectation can be appallingly confused, as in this case. Radhika's desire to establish a career as a coach, a career that she set out on after injury had caused her to bring her playing career to a premature end, was not seen as a successful new beginning but as an attack on her father's ego.

A Career Derailed: From Tennis to Training

Since her childhood, Deepak has invested more than Rs 2.5 crore in training Radhika in tennis. A two-year-old injury, however, stopped her from becoming a professional tennis player. Radhika diversified into coaching budding players and renting out tennis courts at several places subsequently. She also dabbled on social media, hoping to become an influencer, and had posted a music video a year ago while making and posting Instagram reels regularly.

Even though he had spent a lot of money on his daughter's career, Deepak was said to be angry with her social media posting.

The Final Clash Over Dreams and Financial Pressure

Deepak's income was about Rs 15 lakh a year from his brokerage profession. He would frequently tell his daughter to shut down her training sessions, stating that he was earning sufficiently for the family. Despite his insistence, Radhika was dedicated to her aspirations and requested her father to have faith in her. According to sources, she told him, "You have spent Rs 2.5 crore on me. I will never allow that amount to go to waste. I will train young players based on my talent and experience in tennis." This ghastly series of events points to a strong clash between a father's suffering and a daughter's unwavering commitment to her aspirations.
