Weather Update January 1 2026: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the northern hilly regions of the country will receive heavy snowfall on the first day of the New Year.
Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand
The states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to experience bone-chilling cold waves and dense fog, especially in the early morning and late evening hours. Isolated places over Western Himalayan Region Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit Baltistan-Muzaffarabad are likely to receive a fresh bounty of snowfall.
Active western disturbances, multiple upper-air circulations and persistent jet stream conditions are likely to drive widespread winter weather across the nation.
Weather Update January 1 2026-Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan
During early morning and late evening hours, dense to very dense fog is likely to prevail. Places like Meerut, Hastinapur, Amritsar, Kaithal, Kurukshetra and Panipat are likely to experience severe cold waves. These conditions are expected to continue till January 3. In isolated places, there may be a low chance of rainfall for a few hours.
West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha
These states are likely to remain challenged by high dense fog, especially in the early morning hours. Cold waves are likely to disrupt travel for commuters.
