Fresh FIR registered based on parents’ allegations
A new FIR has been registered due to the death of an IIT Bombay student, Sahil Wakode, with his parents alleging that caste discrimination and harassment led to his death. The police have used abetment to suicide and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for filing the case and investigation. The allegations are part of the investigation and cannot be considered proven by any court of law to date.
The Crime Branch takes over the investigation
The investigation has been transferred from the Powai Police to the Mumbai Crime Branch, with the investigation being led by an ACP-level officer. This happened after a confrontation between the police and the parents of the deceased, who had demanded that some action be taken against the culprits before they claimed their son’s body.
Exam incident under scrutiny
IIT Bombay Suicide Case: The case also centers on an examination incident earlier on the day of Wakode’s death. IIT Bombay said he was found using a mobile phone during an exam and that he was subsequently counseled by faculty, with no disciplinary action initiated against him. His parents, however, have alleged that he faced caste-based harassment and pressure on campus. The Crime Branch investigation is expected to examine these competing accounts and establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
