Jharkhand news: L&T Gets Initial Nod for 1,600 MW Plant as Hemant Soren Government Pushes Power Expansion

Larsen & Toubro has received a Limited Notice to Proceed for a 1,600 MW thermal plant at Chandrapura, Jharkhand, a key step as the state looks to expand its power capacity.

Jharkhand news: Jharkhand‘s power sector has a big new project on the way. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has received an initial nod to build the main part of a 1,600 MW thermal power plant at Chandrapura. Here is what that means in plain language.

What Has L&T Actually Received?

L&T has been given a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP). Think of it as a first green signal. It is the initial approval for L&T to move ahead with the project. The full go-ahead comes later. The plant is a collaboration between Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and Coal India Ltd, and the order came from their joint venture, DVC CIL Power Private Ltd.

What Will Be Built at Chandrapura?

The project will have two 800 MW ultra-supercritical units. L&T will design, manufacture, supply and install key equipment such as boilers, steam turbines, generators and electrostatic precipitators. The last of these helps catch fine ash before it escapes into the air.

“Ultra-supercritical” simply means the plant runs steam at very high temperature and pressure. This is designed to give higher efficiency and lower emissions per unit of power than conventional thermal technology. In everyday terms, you get more electricity from the same amount of coal.Coal will come from Central Coalfields Limited, a Coal India subsidiary in Jharkhand, and the plant will use existing Chandrapura infrastructure.

Why This Matters for Jharkhand

Once commissioned, the plant will add significant generation capacity in the state and support growing electricity needs from industry and economic activity. More reliable power generally means better conditions for factories, mining, small businesses and households.

The project also fits a wider push. In December 2025, the Ramgarh power plant began commercial production at one of its units, and the operator invited Chief Minister Hemant Soren to visit, a sign of state backing for energy infrastructure. Plans for a larger Patratu power complex are also in place.

What Happens Next?

This is not the finish line. The project must still secure environmental clearance and other statutory permissions. A local report says power generation could begin around 2031-32. Large power projects often face delays, so timelines are best treated as estimates.
