Joshimath

Joshimath is now safe, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday, adding that there’s no fear in people’s mind as he flagged off the two-day Auli marathon from the subsidence-hit town. The event is being held to bring the confidence among residents of the town.

Everything is normal in Joshimath, says CM Dhami

The Uttarakhand Ski Mountaineering Association and the Sky Running Association have organised a marathon in which more than 300 runners from various states will compete.

“It is a matter of pride for us that a marathon of such a grand scale begins from Joshimath. We are trying to take several other measures to promote tourism in Uttarakhand," Uttarakhand CM Dhami said. Everything is now safe in the town and there is no fear in the minds of people, he added.

“An atmosphere of fear about Joshimath was created in the initial days of the problem. But everything is normal here. The state government has taken positive steps to overcome the problem.

“As a result, more than 11.30 lakh people have already registered for the Char Dham Yatra, which begins on April 22,” the chief minister said.

He said that around 46 lakh people visited Uttarakhand for the yatra last year and the numbr is expected to further rise.

“Auli and Joshimath are absolutely safe now and ready to welcome devotees coming for the annual pilgrimage. The marathon being held in Joshimath is proof of this,” Dhami said.

Joshimath Crisis

In January, the Uttarakhand government  had declared Joshimath’s all nine municipal wards as “landslide-subsidence zone” under the disaster management act. The state government has also begun evacuation of residents from these areas.

In Joshimath, large cracks in homes, farms, and roads caused by cracks in grounds forced people to leave their homes and move to relief centres in the month of January.
