Anurag Dhanda: Indore Water Contamination Row Sparks Political Clash After Resident Complaints

He questioned whether public health concerns were being adequately addressed and alleged that governance efforts were focused more on publicity.

Anurag Dhanda: A political controversy has erupted in Indore after allegations surfaced that residents in the Bhagirathpura area are still receiving contaminated water despite previous deaths linked to polluted supply. A video statement from a local resident circulated on 24 February claimed that even newly supplied water sourced from the Narmada River appeared dirty, forcing households to rely on previously stored tanker water.

Opposition leader Anurag Dhanda criticized the situation, accusing the state administration of failing to ensure safe drinking water. He questioned whether public health concerns were being adequately addressed and alleged that governance efforts were focused more on publicity than on basic civic services. His remarks targeted the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government in Madhya Pradesh.

According to the resident’s statement, authorities recently resumed piped supply but informed locals that tanker deliveries would stop, leaving them with no option but to use the allegedly contaminated water. Such complaints have intensified concerns about water treatment, pipeline maintenance, and monitoring standards in urban localities.

Public health experts note that contaminated drinking water can lead to outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases, cholera, and other infections, especially in densely populated neighborhoods. They stress that municipal bodies must conduct regular testing, flush pipelines after contamination incidents, and provide immediate alternative supply when safety is uncertain.

Local administration officials have not yet issued a detailed public response to the latest allegations. Further clarification is expected regarding water quality reports, corrective measures, and whether emergency supply arrangements will continue.
