As the upcoming elections in Madhya Pradesh draw near, both the Congress and BJP are actively vying for voters’ support to secure control of the state. In this context, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently unveiled a new initiative aimed at appealing to the elderly population. Speaking at the ‘Mukhyamantri Ladli Bahna Sammelan’ event in Panna district, Chouhan criticized the previous Congress-led government for discontinuing various schemes introduced by the BJP administration. These included initiatives such as providing bicycles to children, laptops to students, financial assistance to new mothers, and supporting the elderly in undertaking pilgrimages.

I will gradually increase the amount of Ladli Bahna Yojana from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 per month

Chouhan emphasized that the Congress government had halted these programs upon assuming power. He expressed his determination to revive and expand these schemes, promising to reintroduce the pilgrimage trips for the elderly, this time even offering flights in addition to train journeys. The Chief Minister also highlighted the discontinuation of the ‘Ladli Bahna Yojana,’ a scheme that supported the marriage of daughters. He pledged to gradually increase the financial assistance provided through this initiative from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 per month. Additionally, Chouhan announced plans to enhance educational facilities, including the introduction of science faculty classes and the elevation of Gunaur’s Girls’ High School to a Higher Secondary School.

In light of the approaching elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Madhya Pradesh on August 20. During his visit, Shah will launch the ‘Gareeb Kalyan Mahaabhiyan’ campaign in Bhopal, aiming to connect with the populace and promote the government’s welfare measures. The BJP has been the dominant political force in the state since 2003, except for a brief interlude after the 2018 elections when the Congress briefly held power. Shah’s itinerary also includes attending meetings in Gwalior, including a state executive gathering and a session with party members from the region.
