Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya has come under heavy criticism from the Congress for his statement that "girls who come out dressed in dirty clothes will be shurpankha", but Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Laxman Singh has come out in support of the BJP leader.

He said that in some sense this statement of Vijayvargiya is correct. The special thing is that Laxman Singh, a five-time Lok Sabha member and three-time MLA, is the younger brother of veteran Congress leader Digvijay Singh. Kailash Vijayvargiya made this controversial comment last Wednesday at a religious function in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

What did Digvijay's brother Laxman say?

Senior Congress MLA Laxman Singh supported Vijayvargiya's statement in a tweet on Sunday night. He said, “Heard Kailash ji’s statement on “Shurpanakha”. True in some sense. Indore is the city of the rituals of Ahilya Devi. Attention should be paid to the dress. But Kailash Bhai, you are the uncrowned king of Indore, then how is this happening?"

Laxman Singh left Congress in 2003 and joined BJP and left BJP in 2009 and then went back to Congress.

Last week, Vijayvargiya had said, "When I leave for home at night, I see educated young people and children under the influence of drugs….I feel like getting down (from the car) and slapping them five to seven times to sober them up".

"We see the goddess in women. But (with) the kind of bad dresses the girls wear and move around, they do not embody the goddess but look like 'Shurpanakha'. God has given you a good and beautiful body…..dress well, friends," he had said.

It is worth mentioning that in the Indian mythological book "Ramayana", Shurpanakha has been described as the sister of Ravana, the king of Lanka, and according to the legend, Lord Rama's younger brother Laxman cut off Shurpanakha's nose for her indecent conduct.
