Ahead of the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has published a comprehensive report revealing significant details about the state's sitting MLAs.

Criminal Records of MLAs

  • The ADR, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting transparency in the electoral process, has uncovered that among the 230 sitting MLAs in Madhya Pradesh, a notable 93 have criminal cases registered against them.

Party-wise Distribution of MLAs with Criminal Records

  • Breaking down the figures by political affiliation, the report discloses that:
  • BJP: Out of the 93 MLAs with criminal cases, 39 belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • Congress: The Congress Party features 52 MLAs with criminal cases.
  • BSP: One MLA from the Bahujan Samaj Party has a criminal case.
  • Independent: The remaining MLA with a criminal record is independent.

Serious Criminal Charges

  • Additionally, within this group of 93 MLAs, 47 face serious criminal charges. Notably, one MLA has a murder case (IPC section 302) registered against them, six MLAs have cases of attempted murder (IPC 307), and two MLAs have cases related to crimes against women (IPC 354).

Wealth and Educational Qualifications of MLAs

  • The ADR report also delves into the financial and educational profiles of sitting MLAs in Madhya Pradesh:
  • Among the 230 sitting MLAs, 186 are classified as 'crorepati,' signifying their substantial wealth. Of these, 76 out of 97 Congress MLAs are crorepati, with Sanjay Shukla emerging as the richest among them, boasting a total wealth of over Rs 139 crore.
  • In the BJP camp, 107 out of 129 MLAs are crorepati. The wealthiest BJP MLA is Sanjay Pathak, with a total wealth exceeding Rs 226 crore.
  • Three independent MLAs also fall under the 'crorepati' category.
  • Regarding educational qualifications, the report reveals that 62 MLAs have educational qualifications ranging from Class 5th to 12th, while 158 MLAs are graduates or hold higher degrees.
