MP Cabinet Meeting: Transgenders now on OBC list, Madhya Pradesh State Millet Mission scheme also to be implemented

To encourage coarse grains in Madhya Pradesh, ‘Madhya Pradesh State Millet Mission’ scheme will be implemented. Farmers-welfare and agriculture development will implement the scheme in all the districts. Rs 23 crore 25 lakh will be spent for the two-year plan for 2023-24 and 2024-25.

This has been approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Under this scheme, advanced certified seeds of coarse cereals will be provided to the farmers on 80 percent subsidy from cooperative/government institutions.

The state level committee under the chairmanship of Agriculture Production Commissioner will monitor the scheme. The activities of the Millet Mission Scheme will be widely publicised. Training will be given to farmers to promote production, processing and marketing of millet crops. Fairs, workshops, seminars, food festivals, road-shows will be organized at district and state level to promote millet.

Declared International Millet Year

In fact, on the basis of the proposal of the Government of India, the year 2023 has been declared by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Millet Year. The Prime Minister has named Millets as Global Millets (‘Shri Anna’). Government of India is taking many initiatives for this. This decision of the Madhya Pradesh cabinet is its hallmark.

In view of the importance of these millet crops, they have been given the status of nutritious grains. The grains of these crops are rich in iron, calcium, fiber. Along with this, the percentage of fat is also less in them, due to which its use is safe for heart patients and diabetes patients.

OBC status for transgender

The cabinet has approved the inclusion of transgenders in the list of backward classes. Approval was granted to include them in number 94 after number 93 in the list of Madhya Pradesh Backward Classes.

According to media reports “transgenders can now apply for jobs and admission in educational institutions in MP under the 14% quota allocated for OBCs. There are approximately 30,000 transgenders in the state.”
