MP HC reduces punishment of rape convict, says ‘kind enough to leave girl alive’

The Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has reduced the life sentence of rapist considering that he had shown sufficient kindness to leave the innocent alive. The convict had raped a four-year-old girl 15 years ago.

The court has commuted the life sentence of the convict to 20 years rigorous imprisonment. So far, the convict has served 15 years of imprisonment. In April 2009, the Additional Sessions Judge of Indore had sentenced Ram Singh alias Ramu to life imprisonment for raping a four-year-old girl.

On Tuesday (October 18), a bench of Justice Subodh Abhyankar and Justice Satyendra Kumar Singh said in its order that the appellant should undergo 20 years of imprisonment as per law. Ram Singh used to sell medicines and herbs. On 31 May 2007, Ram Singh lured the girl to a tent by luring one rupee and raped her.

What did the lawyer of the convict say?

Ram Singh’s lawyer told the court that his client was falsely implicated. The lawyer said that except the eyewitnesses, no concrete evidence was found to prove the guilt of his client. He has already served 15 years of imprisonment. The lawyer said that the number of years Ram Singh has spent in jail so far, his sentence can be reduced to that.

What did the court say in the decision to reduce the sentence?

At the same time, the public prosecutor said that Ram Singh is not entitled to any kind of leniency. In its judgment, the bench said, “The appellant who has committed the heinous act has no respect for the dignity of a woman and contemplates to commit a sexual offense even with a four-year-old girl.” In such a case, the court does not find the case where the punishment can be reduced to the extent of the punishment of the convict.” However, considering the fact that he showed sufficient compassion to leave the victim alive, the court is of the view That the imprisonment for life may be reduced to rigorous imprisonment of 20 years.”
