Massive protests broke out in Singrauli district on Wednesday as the Congress party raised strong objections to the alleged large-scale cutting of around 6 lakh trees in the Basi–Berdaha region. The issue triggered political tension, culminating in senior Congress leaders staging a sit-in on the road near Ghirouli village.
Protest Erupts Over Felling of 6 Lakh Trees in Singrauli
According to reports, the administration initially tried to stop the protestors. However, after nearly two hours of demonstration, officials eventually escorted former minister Jitu Patwari, former MP Omkar Markam, Kamleshwar Patel, and other Congress leaders into the forest area to inspect the site around 4:30 pm.
Congress Accuses Administration of Favouring Adani Group
The Congress claimed that the felling of such a massive number of trees would destroy the ecological balance and severely affect tribal communities living in the region. They alleged that the administration was acting under pressure and working in favour of the Adani Group, which is reportedly linked to mining and industrial activities in the district.
Party leaders said the scale of tree cutting demanded immediate intervention, transparency, and a detailed investigation. They also accused the district authorities of ignoring environmental norms and failing to consult residents who depend on the forest for livelihood.
Local villagers supported the protest, claiming that the clearance activity began without proper information, raising fears of displacement and long-term environmental damage.
As the controversy escalates, the Congress has demanded a halt to all ongoing activities and called for an independent probe into the permissions granted for the deforestation drive.
