Maihar is a city in Madhya Pradesh which is known for the temple of Maa Sharda and Maihar Sangeet Gharana founded by eminent sarod maestro Baba Allauddin Khan. With a long history of religious unity, Maihar now seems to be heading towards a different future. The state government has directed that now Muslim employees will not be able to work in the management committee of Maa Sharda temple.
In a letter signed by Pushpa Kalesh, deputy secretary of the state's Ministry of Culture and Religious Trusts, the temple committee has been asked to comply with the direction issued on January 17 and submit a report.
Even though according to the rules of the state government, no employee can be removed on religious grounds, but two Muslim employees working in Maa Sharda temple since 1988 may lose their jobs.
An order has also been issued to ban the sale of meat and liquor in Maihar.
Both the above orders were reportedly issued after supporters of right-wing organizations Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal approached Culture and Religious Trusts Minister Usha Singh Thakur in January.
