Mahua Moitra Controversy: Last night, BJP leader Amit Malviya took a dig at Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, accusing her party of deserting her in the midst of a controversy over allegations that she received bribes for posing questions in parliament.
Malviya also claimed that Trinamool Chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has remained silent whenever her party’s leaders face arrests.
“It’s not surprising that Mamata Banerjee has abandoned Mahua Moitra. She will defend no one else but Abhishek Banerjee, who is no less delinquent… Several TMC leaders are in jail on serious corruption and criminal charges, but Mamata Banerjee has maintained radio silence,” Amit Malviya remarked on X (formerly Twitter).
Trinamool Congress denied to comment on
controversy
Trinamool Congress declined to comment on the Mahua Moitra controversy. Trinamool’s West Bengal general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stated, “The party has nothing to say on this issue. We think the person at the center of this controversy is best suited to respond.”
Party sources suggest that the party wishes to avoid involvement in the controversy and will maintain a distance.
Allegations of receiving two crore:
Mahua Moitra faces allegations of receiving ₹2 crore in cash from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for asking questions in parliament.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla requesting an investigation into the allegations that Ms. Moitra received bribes from the businessman and shared her parliament login credentials with him.
Mr. Dubey has also written to the Lokpal, seeking an investigation into the actions of the Trinamool Congress MP. He cited a letter from Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, which presented “disturbing facts with detailed proof” against Ms. Moitra.
Moitra asked for various favours:
According to Darshan Hiranandani, Ms. Moitra frequently made demands and asked for various favors, including expensive luxury items. The businessman also alleged that she provided him with her parliament login credentials and saw attacking the Adani Group as a way to gain fame.
Vinod Sonkar, the head of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee, called the allegations very serious and stated that the committee would examine Mr. Dubey’s letter and Mr. Hiranandani’s affidavit. They will also hear Ms. Moitra’s side, as she vehemently denied the charges and expressed readiness for any inquiry.
