Top sources have told CNN-News18 that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has opened a preliminary inquiry (PE) into Mahua Moitra, the MP for the Trinamool Congress, regarding the “Cash for-Query” case.
They stated that a probe has started based on the registration of a preliminary inquiry.
Additionally, according to sources, Mahua Moitra will not be the subject of a formal FIR until the Parliament Ethics Committee has completed its investigation, as the case is already under its purview.
After BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Moita of accepting “bribes” from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to pose questions in Parliament criticising the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Moita came under fire.
The Lok Sabha Ethics Panel, which was looking into the charges against her, requested that the TMC MP be removed.
According to recent allegations, the Trinamool Congress MP’s Parliament login ID was reportedly accessed from two other locations, including one in the United States, in addition to Dubai.
In the past, Moitra had acknowledged giving Hiranandani, the CEO of the infrastructure and real estate firm Hiranandani Group, access to her official login credentials so that someone in his office could write in the questions to be asked in the Lok Sabha.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal and president of the TMC, finally spoke out about the matter on Thursday. She revealed that efforts were underway to remove Moitra from Parliament, but that doing so would benefit the Krishnanagar legislator in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
“Now, they are planning to expel Mahua (from Parliament). She will become more popular as a result. Whatever she used to say inside (Parliament), she will now say those things outside. Would anyone do something like this three months before the elections if he is not stupid?” Banerjee said.
The Winter Session of Parliament is set to start on December 4, and members have already started submitting their queries. During the session, the House is probably going to decide whether to implement the Ethics Committee’s recommendation that Moitra be expelled.
