Mamata Banerjee: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Offers to Resign Amid Junior Doctors’ Protest Over Rape-Murder Case

Mamata Banerjee: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday expressed her willingness to resign “in the interest of the people” as the deadlock over the junior doctors’ protest continued. The protest was sparked by the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, with the doctors demanding justice for the victim, referred to as “Abhaya,” which means fearless.

Addressing the media, Banerjee stated, “I don’t want the CM’s post. Our government has faced a lot of insult…There is a colour [political motive] in the protests.” She accused her political rivals, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left, of hijacking the protests for their gain. “They just want the chair. I am ready to resign in the interest of the people,” she added.

The ongoing strike by junior doctors has severely affected the functioning of state-run hospitals, as they continue to boycott work in protest. The protesting doctors have made it clear that their movement is apolitical, with one doctor stating, “We don’t want her chair or her resignation. This is an apolitical movement…We are here for Abhaya’s justice.”

Despite a meeting between Banerjee and the delegation of junior doctors, no resolution was reached. The doctors had demanded a live telecast of the meeting, which could not be agreed upon, further prolonging the stalemate.
