Manipur Declared Entire State ‘Disturbed Area’ Amidst Rising Violence

Manipur Violence: Due to the current state of law and order, the Manipur administration on Wednesday designated the whole state as a “disturbed area.” According to a statement from the state administration, the entire state, with the exception of 19 particular police station areas, has been designated as a “disturbed area” under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

Manipur Designated ‘Disturbed Area’ Due to Rising Extremist Activities

The government believes that “violent activities of various extremist/insurgent groups warrant the use of the Armed Forces in aid of civil administration in the entire state of Manipur,” according to the notification. It was further said that due to the “overall law and order situation in the state and the capability of the state machinery, the state government has decided to maintain the status quo on the present disturbed area status” for a period of six months.

Excluded Police Stations and Student Protests Amid Rising Tensions in Manipur

Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Sekmai, Lamsang, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Lamlai, Irilbung, Leimakhong, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol, Moirang, Kakching, and Jiribam are the 19 excluded police station areas. Massive student protest marches over the kidnapping and murder of two students took place in the state capital Imphal on Tuesday. After images of the kids’ bodies surfaced online on Tuesday, a new round of protests got underway. At least 45 protestors were hurt during the protesters’ clashes with the Rapid Action Force (RAF).

Mystery Surrounding Missing Students Deepens Amid CBI Investigation

Students Hijam Linthoingambi (17) and Phijam Hemjit (20) have been missing since July. One of the two pictures that have since surfaced allegedly depicted the students with two armed individuals, while the other picture showed two bodies. The state’s chief executive, N Biren Singh, promised to “assure the people of the state that both the state and central governments are closely working together to nab the perpetrators.” The CBI has been given the case involving the murder of the two young people.

Security Measures Heightened in Manipur Amidst Ongoing Protests

In preparation for potential unrest, sizable contingents of Manipur Police, CRPF, and RAF soldiers have been stationed around Imphal and other regions of the state. In response to the fresh protests, the authorities also reinstated the ban on internet services for the following five days on Tuesday.
