Manipur Violence: Gunfire has been heard coming from the Pallel neighbourhood of Manipur‘s Tengnoupal district since early Friday morning, according to officials. Firearms have been fired intermittently since around 6 am, according to officials. As of just now, they claimed, there had been no reports of injuries or fatalities. Security personnel have been keeping an eye on the situation.
Protests and Attempted Access to Abandoned Homes in Manipur’s Bishnupur District
Two days before to the shooting incident, thousands of protesters assembled in Phougakchao Ikhai in the Bishnupur district on Wednesday and attempted to scale army barricades in order to gain access to their abandoned homes in Torbung. Security forces, including members of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), the Assam Rifles, and the Manipur Police, used tear gas to defuse the tension in the region, according to officials. All five valley districts of Manipur had a complete curfew imposed the day before the protest as a preventative precaution.
Ethnic Violence and Unrest in Manipur Since May 3
Since May 3, when a “Tribal Solidarity March” was staged in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, more than 160 people have been murdered and hundreds injured in ethnic violence in Manipur. Tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, make up 40% of Manipur’s population and are primarily concentrated in the hill area, whereas Meiteis make up around 53% of the population and reside primarily in the Imphal valley.
