Maratha Quota Protest: A curfew has been imposed in Beed, Maharashtra, as the agitation for Maratha reservation intensified, leading to an eruption of protests and vandalism. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) have also been put in place in the area.
Curfew Imposed in Beed
The escalation in protests resulted in the vandalism of politicians' houses and public places in Beed. The residences of two Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLAs and a former minister were set on fire. The Shiv Sena (UBT), an opposition party, demanded the convening of a special session of Parliament to address the Maratha reservation demands.
Maharashtra as Maratha Reservation Agitation Intensifies
Protesters targeted the home of MLA Sandeep Kshirsagar, a member of the NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar, and vehicles parked at his house were also set ablaze. Additionally, another NCP MLA, Prakash Solanke, in Beed district was vandalized and set on fire.
Former minister Jaydattaji Kshirsagar's office in Beed was also set ablaze. He is a member of the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde.
Furthermore, an NCP office operated by the Sharad Pawar-led faction was torched. Protesters also defaced posters of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in Vadgaon Nimbalkar village.
The Maratha community has been protesting across various regions of Maharashtra, seeking reservations in government jobs and education under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.
The agitation further intensified after Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil commenced an indefinite fast on October 25 in Jalna district. This activist had previously undertaken a hunger strike from August 29 to September 14, which was called off after the state government assured an examination of the quota demand.
In response to the unrest, BJP MLA Laxman Madhavrao Pawar and NCP District President Rajeshwar Chavan resigned in Beed.
