Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has voiced strong concerns over the proposed delimitation exercise, arguing that states like Tamil Nadu, which successfully controlled population growth, should not be punished with reduced political representation.
Speaking at the Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting on delimitation, Stalin emphasized the efforts made by Tamil Nadu and other southern states in stabilizing population growth through effective policies and awareness programs.
“Why Penalize Us for Population Control?” – Udhayanidhi Stalin at JAC Meeting
"For decades, states present here have made significant efforts to control and manage population growth. We introduced policies, raised awareness, and achieved what the nation aimed for—a stable population growth. While some other states continued to experience rapid population growth, we acted responsibly. As a result, we reached the population replacement rate much earlier than many other states. But instead of being rewarded for this achievement, we are now at risk of losing our political representation," Stalin stated.
Tamil Nadu Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin Raises Concern Over Delimitation Impact on Southern States
The concern arises from the fact that the delimitation process, based on population numbers, could lead to a reduction in parliamentary seats for states that have effectively controlled their population. Southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, fear that this could weaken their political influence while benefiting states with higher population growth.
The debate over delimitation has reignited discussions on whether political representation should be solely based on population figures or also consider factors like development, governance, and policy success. With strong opposition from southern leaders, the issue is expected to gain momentum in national political discourse in the coming months.
