The much-anticipated commencement of operations from the Navi Mumbai International Airport is now expected in September 2025, with flights possibly taking off on September 17, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. This update was provided by the Adani Group, which is spearheading the airport’s construction, during a review meeting with the Public Undertakings Committee (PUC), comprising Maharashtra MLAs.

Adani Group Informed PUC

Initially, there were efforts to align the airport’s inauguration with Independence Day on August 15, and even earlier plans hinted at a May or June launch, but the delay in terminal completion has shifted the timeline. The Adani Group informed the PUC that the terminal construction will be complete by September 15, allowing operations to begin soon after.

Plans for Simultaneous International and Domestic Flights

In a strategic shift, it has also been revealed that both international and domestic flights may begin simultaneously, instead of launching with domestic flights alone. Over 13,000 workers are currently engaged in final-phase construction at the site to meet this deadline.

Mega Infrastructure for Mega Traffic

Once operational, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is poised to be one of the largest in the region. The airport is designed to handle up to 90 million passengers and 3.02 million tonnes of cargo annually once fully developed. The first phase alone will accommodate 20 million passengers and 800,000 tonnes of cargo, and will include a Code-E runway, parallel taxiways, Terminal 1, a cargo terminal, and multiple other aviation and logistics support facilities.

The upcoming airport is expected to ease the burden on Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, positioning Navi Mumbai as a critical air travel and logistics hub for Western India.
