In a significant step toward decongesting one of the busiest highway corridors in the National Capital Region, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the trial opening of the Shallow Tunnel and Airport Underpasses on the Dwarka Expressway from 29th May 2025.

The trial will be conducted daily between 12 PM and 3 PM, aiming to assess traffic flow and ensure smooth operations before full-scale opening.

Objective: Reducing Traffic on NH-48

The move is expected to ease congestion on the Delhi-Gurugram stretch of NH-48, particularly benefiting commuters traveling to and from the airport, Dwarka, and Gurugram.

According to NHAI’s post on X (formerly Twitter), these underpasses will enhance direct access between Dwarka and key points along the expressway, offering smoother and quicker transit during trial hours.

Urban Mobility Reinvented

Part of the broader vision to modernize India's urban transport infrastructure, the Dwarka Expressway project promises to transform the daily commute experience for thousands. The trial phase will help fine-tune operations, safety protocols, and traffic management strategies.

Commuters are advised to follow official updates and cooperate with authorities during the trial phase for a hassle-free experience.

The shallow tunnel and airport underpasses are built using advanced engineering techniques, ensuring structural safety, water drainage, lighting, and ventilation. Safety audits and trial assessments are part of NHAI’s operational strategy to ensure commuter convenience without compromising on standards.

Experts believe this trial phase is crucial for identifying any design or traffic flow issues before final commissioning. The feedback received during this time will help NHAI and local authorities fine-tune traffic signals, signage, and lane markings.

Public Cooperation Sought

Motorists are urged to follow designated routes, abide by trial hours, and remain alert to signage and traffic marshals during the trial window. Any feedback from commuters will be welcomed and assessed by the authority to make necessary adjustments.

This trial marks the beginning of a new chapter in urban mobility for Delhi-NCR, where faster, cleaner, and more efficient transport is becoming a top priority. With upcoming metro lines, urban highways, and expressways taking shape, the city’s transport ecosystem is evolving rapidly.
