Patna News: Work has initiated on the proposed water metro system of Patna with the first charging facility now being under the development stages at the Gandhi Ghat.
The charging infrastructure would be used for supporting vessels that are expected to operate on the initial 10.5-kilometer corridor between Kangan Ghat and Digha Ghat. The state government is planning similar facilities at Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat in the upcoming phases.

The first stage would involve the connection of a series of vital riverfront location, with Gayghat and Gandhi Ghat as the primary stops. The Bihar Government is planning to commence the Patna Water Metro service starting from Kangan Ghat and passing via Gayghat, Gandhi Ghat, Digha Ghat, Nariyal Ghat, Paanapur, Konhra Ghat, Farakka Mahto Ghat, Kali Ghat in Sonpur and Chechhar Ghat.
Would This Redefine Development In Patna?
The Patna Water Metro system has been designed by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation Limited for future expansion.
The government authorities are planning for the development of around 10 terminals and 4 routes over time. This would help connect districts like Saran and Vaishali with Patna via river transport. It is expected that the Patna Water Metro system would help in strengthening the National Waterway 1 along the sacred River Ganga. Furthermore, it would help in offering an eco-friendly, affordable option of transportation for tourists as well as daily commuters visiting the riverfront.
MV-Gomdhar Kunwar, the primary boat that is planned for the water metro system in Patna, is likely to cost more than Rs. 12 crore while the entire project is likely to cost approximately Rs. 908 crore.
Developed jointly by the Bihar government and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the water metro system in Bihar’s Capital would receive technical support from engineers at Cochin Shipyard Limited.
