In a major healthcare milestone, Delhi BJP leader and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the implementation of Ayushman Bharat – PM Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) in the national capital, with enhanced benefits for Delhi residents. In a tweet accompanied by a cartoon image stating “Promise Delivered – Jo Kaha, So Kiya”, she confirmed that eligible families in Delhi will now receive an annual health insurance cover of ₹10 lakh, double the coverage available in other states.
What is PM Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)?
Launched by the Government of India, PM-JAY is the world's largest government-funded health insurance scheme, offering cashless treatment of up to ₹5 lakh per year per eligible family at empanelled public and private hospitals across the country.
What’s New for Delhi?
While other states have been offering ₹5 lakh under PM-JAY, Delhi government under Rekha Gupta has decided to top-up the coverage by another ₹5 lakh, ensuring that each eligible family now receives a total of ₹10 lakh per year in health coverage.
Benefits for Delhi Residents:
₹10 Lakh Annual Cover: Double the benefit compared to other states.
Cashless & Paperless Treatment: At empanelled hospitals including top private and public healthcare facilities.
Wider Hospital Access: Residents can seek treatment not only in Delhi but in empanelled hospitals across India.
No Age or Family Size Limit: Covers the entire family regardless of the number of members or age.
Covers Pre-existing Conditions: Beneficiaries do not need to worry about health history—coverage starts from day one.
Empowering People with Accessible Healthcare
This step is being celebrated as a pro-people move ensuring that healthcare is not a privilege but a right for every eligible resident of Delhi. The doubled insurance cover is expected to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses significantly, especially for economically weaker sections.
As Delhi officially joins the Ayushman Bharat network, Rekha Gupta’s announcement marks a significant leap towards universal health coverage—making the capital a model of inclusive governance and timely delivery of promises.
