Chennai is grappling with its third major flood in less than a decade, underscoring the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Responding urgently, PM Narendra Modi has approved a Rs. 561.29 crore urban flood mitigation project for Chennai under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund.

With a significant central assistance of Rs. 500 crore, the ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project’ aims to fortify the city against recurring floods. This groundbreaking initiative focuses on enhancing infrastructure to manage rainwater effectively, reducing flood risks and minimizing the impact on residents’ lives.

Amit Shah announced the news:

“PM Modi has approved the first urban flood mitigation project of Rs. 561.29 crore for ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project’ under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF), which also includes Central assistance of Rs. 500 crore. This mitigation project will help make Chennai flood-resilient,” says Union Home Minister Amit Shah on X.

It sets a precedent for urban flood mitigation efforts in India and is expected to serve as a model for safeguarding other metropolitan areas facing similar threats. The announcement coincides with Chennai grappling with the aftermath of recent floods, emphasizing the critical need for long-term flood management solutions amidst ongoing rescue and relief operations.
