Primary Suspect in West Bengal Egra Blast Case Dies from Injuries, Investigation Takes a New Turn

Egra Blast: At 3 am on Friday, the primary suspect in the West Bengal Egra bomb case, Krishnapada Bag alias Bhanu Bag, passed away from his wounds in a Cuttack, Odisha, private hospital. He was the proprietor of the illicit firework factory where the Tuesday explosion left nine people dead.

Suspect with Severe Burn Injuries Apprehended by CID

Bag, who suffered 80 percent burn injuries in the explosion, was apprehended by the CID division, according to sources with the West Bengal Police. After the explosion, he escaped to Odisha and was later treated in a hospital. Police sources also said that because of his injuries, they had not recorded his statement. Following the explosion in the East Midnapore village of Khadikul, a FIR was filed against Bag, his son Biswajit Bag, and his nephew Indrajit Bag. On May 17, Biswajit and Indrajit were taken into custody. Soon, Biswajit would be transported to West Bengal and appeared in court.

Opposition Parties Criticize State Government's Handling of Blast Incident

Following the explosion, opposition parties condemned the state government's response, and Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister, said she had no objections to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) looking into the incident. But on Thursday, the Calcutta High Court rejected Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, and ordered the West Bengal police's CID unit to carry on with its inquiry.
