Ahead of investors’ summit, Punjab Cabinet approves new electric vehicle and industrial policies

Punjab Cabinet: The Punjab Cabinet under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann approved the new electric vehicle policy on Friday. Giving this information to mediapersons, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the Punjab Electric Vehicle Policy and the new Industrial Policy have both been approved in the cabinet.

A slew of government schemes were approved by the Cabinet.

The approval comes days ahead of an investors’ summit being organised by the state government on February 23-24 in Mohali.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Aman Arora, who was present with Cheema, said that electric vehicles are the future. The Punjab government had already announced incentives for those switching over to electric vehicles under the vehicle scrapping policy. He said charging stations will be installed on a large scale at various locations across the state.

New industrial policy

Arora said the new industrial policy will make Punjab a favourite investment destination. In his regard Chief Minister had recently visited some states in the country to invite investments. He also said that suggestions of various stakeholders from the industry had been incorporated and incentives like low power tariff were being offered to the industries.

Public mining sites

Cabinet also approved introduction of public mining sites to ensure that sand and gravel are available at reasonable rates to common people. Initially, 18 such sites will come up in seven districts. Chief minister will inaugurate one out of these on February 5.

In addition, 50 such sites will become functional by the end of March. Once these mining sites become operational, sand will be easily available to the public, said Arora.

66 Principals to be sent to Singapore for training

The Cabinet gave consent to send 66 principals for training to Singapore. The Department of School Education will send a batch of 36 principals to Principals Academy and 30 to National Institute of Education, an autonomous institute of the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. They will learn state-of-the-art teaching practices, leadership skills, creation of teaching-learning materials and audio-visual technology.

Schools of eminence

The Cabinet okayed implementation of a State scheme for upgrading Government schools into Schools of Eminence (SoE). These will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

Nod for state election commissioner

To ensure elections to urban local bodies and panchayati raj in fair, clean and peaceful manner, the Cabinet approved appointment of an eligible officer as Punjab State Election Commissioner.

Approves special remission for life convicts

The Cabinet approved special remission to convicts confined in jailed , in the second phase to commemorate the 75th Independence Day of India being celebrated as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. It also gave green signal to premature release of life convicts confined in the jails of state.
