Amritpal Singh’s outrageous statement on Punjab being India’s integral part sparks row

The process of giving controversial statements against India by Khalistan supporter and Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh is still going on. Now he has said that Punjab is not an integral part of India. He didn’t stop here. He said that the picture of Punjab is not complete without Lahore and Nankana Sahib. Earlier Amritpal had said that he does not consider himself an Indian. In an interview given to a news agency, Amritpal had said that the Indian passport is a document and it does not make him an Indian.

On the other hand, Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja has written a letter to the DGP on Wednesday demanding an inquiry into the attack at Ajnala police station. He said, ‘A case was registered against Tufan Singh, Amritpal’s accomplice, and later the police let him off. Here the question arises whether Tufan Singh was innocent. In the letter, Raja Warding has also expressed the apprehension of spoiling the atmosphere of Punjab. Raja said that action should be taken against Amritpal’s supporters.

On Amritpal Singh’s statement that he does not consider himself an Indian, former diplomat KC Singh has said that radical Sikh preacher and self-styled separatist Amritpal Singh should surrender his passport, as Amritpal had said that he does not consider himself an Indian citizen. Sunehra Punjab party chief KC Singh said Amritpal should seek his recognition as a stateless person from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as ‘Khalistan exists only in his mind’.

Amritpal was working in a transport company in Dubai before returning to India last year and becoming a Sikh preacher. He took over as the chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’, a social organization founded by actor-activist Deep Sidhu, who died in an accident in February last year. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said that Khalistan supporters are getting funding from Pakistan and other countries and the state police is capable of dealing with the issue.
