In a key cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab government approved several major decisions focusing on sports, rural development, and religious respect.

Bhagwant Mann: ₹25.40 Crore Approved for Asian Hockey Championship

The cabinet sanctioned a budget of ₹25.40 crore for hosting the Asian Hockey Championship in Punjab. This will mark the first time the state hosts the prestigious continental tournament, aiming to boost sports infrastructure and promote hockey at the grassroots level.

Green Signal for Street Lights in All Villages

In a major push for rural development, the cabinet also approved the installation of street lights in all villages across Punjab. The move is expected to enhance safety, improve infrastructure, and ensure better living conditions in rural areas.

Religious Bill to Be Introduced

The cabinet gave its nod to introduce the ‘Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Bill 2026’ in a special session of the state विधानसभा. The proposed legislation aims to prevent incidents of sacrilege and ensure respect for Guru Granth Sahib.

Focus on Development and Sentiments

Officials said the decisions reflect the government’s balanced focus on development, sports promotion, and safeguarding religious sentiments. The initiatives are expected to have a significant social and cultural impact across the state.

The announcements come as part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure, promote Punjab’s sporting legacy, and address sensitive issues through legislative measures.

Officials indicated that execution plans for these approvals will be rolled out in phases, with departments directed to ensure timely implementation. The government is expected to monitor progress closely to deliver visible outcomes on the ground, particularly in rural infrastructure and sports readiness ahead of the championship.

The statewide street lighting initiative is also expected to improve night-time mobility and security, especially for women and elderly residents, while contributing to the overall development of rural infrastructure in Punjab.
