Bhagwant Mann Government Caps Private School Fee Hike at 5%, Restricts Forced Purchases

The move is intended to give families greater freedom to purchase required materials from the sellers of their choice.

The Punjab government has announced measures aimed at providing relief to parents and protecting students from excessive financial pressure related to private school education.

Bhagwant Mann Government Caps Private School Fee Hike at 5%

Punjab Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that under the Bhagwant Mann-led government’s decision, private schools will not be allowed to increase annual fees by more than 5%.

Restricts Forced Purchases

The government has also prohibited private schools from forcing parents or students to purchase books, uniforms or other educational items from a specific shop. The move is intended to give families greater freedom to purchase required materials from the sellers of their choice.

Cheema described education as a right of children rather than a means for commercial exploitation. He said the decisions would provide significant relief to parents across Punjab and help bring greater transparency and accountability to private school fee practices.

The measures are expected to be particularly significant for families facing rising education-related expenses, as schools prepare for the new academic cycle.
