In a significant step towards flood prevention and river management, the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has announced a large-scale desilting drive across key rivers in the state. The initiative aims to strengthen embankments and ensure smooth water flow during the monsoon season.
Desilting at 95 identified locations
According to government sources, desilting work will be carried out at 95 designated sites across Punjab. The operation will cover major rivers, including Beas, Ravi, Siswan, Sirsa, and Budki, where silt accumulation has often led to waterlogging and overflow risks during heavy rains.
Focus on Beas and Ghaggar rivers
The Beas River will see desilting at 28 locations, while 13 sites have been selected along the Ghaggar River. The government plans to remove 3 to 6 feet of silt from these areas to improve the riverbed’s capacity and prevent future flooding in nearby villages and farmlands.
A proactive step for disaster preparedness
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that this is a preventive measure aimed at protecting lives, property, and agricultural land. He emphasised that flood management is a priority for his administration and that scientific methods will be adopted for sustainable results.
Public participation and environmental care
The state government has also urged citizens and local bodies to participate in maintaining cleanliness along riverbanks and preventing dumping of waste materials. Environmental experts will monitor the desilting process to ensure that the ecological balance of rivers remains intact.
This initiative underscores the Mann government’s commitment to disaster preparedness, environmental sustainability, and rural safety, marking another milestone in Punjab’s proactive governance.
