Bhagwant Mann: Government Steps Up Elderly Welfare Efforts as Dr Baljit Kaur Highlights Major Initiatives

Punjab government, led by CM Bhagwant Mann, launches initiatives to improve senior citizens’ welfare, focusing on healthcare, legal aid, and financial support.

Bhagwant Mann: Under CM Bhagwant Mann, Punjab has been bolstering the welfare of its senior citizens. Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur highlighted the major steps taken to provide respect, good health, and safety to the elderly.

State-Level Campaign for Senior Citizens

 Punjab is launching an extensive campaign, “Sade Buzurg Sada Maan,” on January 16, 2026, in District SAS Nagar. The campaign will be implemented district, wise and aims at delivering essential services to senior citizens right at their homes all over the state. 

Through this program, elderly people will be able to attend 

  • Free health and medical camps, including eye, ENT, and general health checkups 
  • Cataract screening and surgery Participate in Yoga sessions and be aware through programmes on healthy aging Get legal and social support services 

Financial Commitment and Support Services

Dr. Baljit Kaur informed us that the government has set aside almost 24 crores exclusively for the welfare of senior citizens in the 2025-26 financial year. 

The allocation accounts for

  • Free medical camps and health awareness schemes 
  • Old Age Homes and Day Care Centers 
  • Support the State Action Plan for Senior Citizens funds totaling 786. 
  • A toll-free helpline (14567) for senior citizens to reach out to when having issues or grievances 

Strengthening Elderly Rights and Legal Protection 

This campaign strengthens the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which is the legal backbone for the rights of senior citizens. As per this legal framework, Punjab has been able to dispose of a large number of cases through Maintenance Tribunals and Appellate Tribunals, thereby providing elders with justice and support in a timely manner. 

Holistic Vision for Welfare

 Dr. Baljit Kaur strongly asserted that senior citizens constitute the heritage of our society, and it is a government debt of honor to make sure that they live their old age with dignity, respect, and well-being. These measures exemplify the government’s holistic stance a blend of healthcare, legal aid, monetary suppor aimed at raising the living standards of elderly people in Punjab.
