In a major milestone for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's administration has completed two years of providing 300 units of free electricity per month to every household in the state. Since its implementation on July 1, 2022, the scheme has significantly eased the financial burden on the people of Punjab.
From Promise To Reality
AAP Punjab, through an official tweet, announced the success of the initiative with the message “Delivering as Promised!” and highlighted the impact of the scheme:
Over 90% of households now receive zero electricity bills, making it one of the most successful welfare initiatives in the state.
Thousands of crores of rupees have been saved by ordinary families—money that remained in the hands of the people rather than going towards utility payments.
A Pro-People Policy That Made a Difference
The Mann-led government contrasted its policy with that of traditional political parties, stating that while others raised power tariffs, the AAP government chose to reduce the burden and honour the hardworking citizens of Punjab.
The scheme, hailed as a key electoral promise, was implemented shortly after AAP came to power in the state. It has not only provided financial relief but also contributed to increased household savings, benefiting especially the middle and lower-income segments.
This success comes amid broader governance reforms and public service guarantees that the AAP government claims reflect its people-first approach.
With this move, Punjab has joined the ranks of states taking progressive steps toward affordable and accessible utilities for all.
