The Bhagwant Mann government has launched what it describes as the state’s largest-ever sewage desilting operation as part of preparations for the upcoming monsoon season.
Bhagwant Mann Launches Largest-Ever Sewage Desilting Drive Ahead of Monsoon
Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the initiative is being carried out under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann with the objective of preventing waterlogging and improving urban drainage infrastructure across the state.
According to the government, around 1,400 waterlogging-prone locations have been identified and are being monitored in real time. As part of the campaign, approximately 2,200 kilometres of sewage network is being cleaned, including about 800 kilometres of main sewer lines and 1,600 kilometres of branch lines.
The government said the project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen civic infrastructure
Officials stated that several sewer lines being cleaned under the drive had not undergone desilting or maintenance for nearly 25 to 30 years. The large-scale operation is expected to improve drainage efficiency and reduce the risk of flooding in cities and towns during heavy rainfall.
The government said the project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen civic infrastructure and ensure better public services. Authorities have expressed confidence that the extensive cleaning and monitoring exercise will help make Punjab better prepared for the monsoon season.
Harjot Singh Bains said the government will continue to provide updates on the progress of the operation and monitor the condition of drainage systems across the state to minimize waterlogging-related problems.
