Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday dismissed claims circulating on social media that he had challenged the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, calling such assertions misleading and baseless. Mann clarified that he appeared before the Sikh religious institution with humility and respect, not in defiance.
Bhagwant Mann Rejects Claims of Challenging Sri Akal Takht Sahib
In a statement, the Chief Minister said that for the past several days, certain mischievous elements had been spreading false narratives online, suggesting that he had approached Sri Akal Takht Sahib after challenging its authority. He strongly refuted these claims, stating that he neither has the intention nor the standing to do so.
“Appeared as a Humble Sikh, Not in Defiance”
Bhagwant Mann said he presented himself before Sri Akal Takht Sahib as a humble Sikh, following Sikh traditions and values. He emphasized that he appeared as a sewadar (servant) and placed his side respectfully before the Sikh clergy.
“I do not have such courage or stature to challenge Sri Akal Takht Sahib. I appeared with humility and placed my clarification as a sewadar,” Mann said, underlining his reverence for the highest temporal seat of Sikhism.
Misinformation on Social Media
The Chief Minister expressed concern over the spread of misinformation on social media platforms, stating that false narratives were being deliberately circulated to create confusion and controversy. He urged people not to fall prey to misleading posts and to rely on verified information.
Political observers note that statements related to Sri Akal Takht Sahib often carry deep religious and emotional significance in Punjab, making accuracy and restraint crucial in public discourse.
Respect for Sikh Institutions
Mann reiterated his respect for Sikh religious institutions and said that Sri Akal Takht Sahib holds an unparalleled place in the spiritual and temporal life of the Sikh community. He stressed that his actions were guided by faith, humility, and adherence to Sikh maryada.
Public and Political Reactions
The clarification has sparked discussions across Punjab’s political and social circles. Supporters have described Mann’s statement as an effort to counter misinformation and uphold the dignity of Sikh institutions, while critics continue to seek clarity on the broader context of the issue.
Sri Akal Takht Sahib, established by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, is regarded as the supreme authority in Sikh temporal matters, and any reference to it remains a sensitive subject within the community.
The Chief Minister’s statement is being seen as an attempt to quell controversy and reaffirm his commitment to Sikh values and institutions.
