Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has highlighted the increasing flow of canal water into agricultural fields, saying the development is providing fresh momentum to farming across the state.

Mann said water reaching farms through distributaries, minor canals and smaller irrigation channels is helping strengthen the state’s agricultural system and improve access to canal irrigation for farmers.
Fresh Momentum to Punjab Agriculture
According to Mann, nearly 40,000 cusecs of water is currently flowing through the canal network. He described the figure not merely as a statistic but as an indication of development and the government’s efforts to expand irrigation facilities.
The Chief Minister said the availability of canal water is helping bring agricultural land under a more reliable irrigation system. Greater dependence on canal irrigation can also play an important role in supporting sustainable water management in Punjab, where groundwater depletion has remained a major concern.
Mann presented the expansion and utilisation of the canal network as part of the state government’s broader development agenda. He said the process of strengthening Punjab’s agricultural infrastructure would continue.
The Chief Minister also described the ongoing efforts as a “development revolution”, signalling that his government intends to continue focusing on irrigation and other measures aimed at supporting the farming sector.
The emphasis on canal irrigation comes at a time when efficient water management has become increasingly important for Punjab’s agriculture. Expanding surface-water irrigation can help diversify the state’s water sources and potentially reduce pressure on groundwater resources.
