Bhagwant Mann: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is concluding its 237th day of the “Punjab Against Drugs” campaign that aims to totally eliminate drug abuse in the state. The campaign involves a combination of law enforcement, awareness, and rehabilitation in order to make Punjab drug-free.
Law Enforcement and Crackdowns
The government followed through on its commitment to carry out law enforcement actions against drug traffickers and abusers. As a result, special task forces began conducting systematic raids in major districts to apprehend (and confiscate illegal substances from) key dealers and their customers. It was also reported that drug problems have diminished in many cities and villages, which is a sign that enforcement actions are effective.
Programs for Rehabilitation and Support
In addition to enforcement, the AAP government has made rehabilitation a priority for drug users. Several centres have been created to provide counselling, medical treatment, and job training to help people reintegrate into society. According to CM Mann, rehabilitation is just as important as enforcement to address the causes of addiction.
Community Awareness Programs
The campaign is also geared toward educating the public about the dangers of drug abuse, especially among youth. The awareness programs in schools, colleges, and communities have reached thousands of people, with messages about the health consequences, social consequences, and legal consequences from using drugs and alcohol. Leaders in the local community and NGOs were similarly engaged to bolster the effort.
Engagement and Volunteerism through the Community
Volunteer-based programs and community engagement have been essential to the campaign’s success. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious behaviour, attend awareness events, and act as mentors to youth considering drugs. The effort has collectively increased liveliness in specific neighbourhoods within various districts.
Important Highlights
On the 237th day, the AAP government provided notable highlights:
- Hundreds of arrests and widespread access to illegal drugs.
- The expansion of drug treatment and counselling centres.
- More public engagement with awareness events and anti-drug initiatives.
- Greater coordination with police enforcement, healthcare providers, and a focus on community initiatives.
CM Mann’s appeal for Punjab to be free of Drugs
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann repeated his commitment for Punjab free of drugs with an appeal to the public to support his campaign. “Together with strict action and public involvement, we can try to protect our youth and make Punjab a safer and healthier place to live,” he said.
Day 237 is not only a milestone but also a reminder that an ongoing commitment, active community engagement, and proactive government are required to eliminate substance use from Punjab.
