In a significant breakthrough against cross-border drug smuggling, the Commissionerate Police, Amritsar, has dismantled an international narco-trafficking cartel and arrested three individuals with 10.248 kg of heroin, Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) announced on Saturday.
Punjab Police Bust Cross-Border Cartel, Seize 10 Kg Heroin
According to the preliminary investigation, one of the accused, Sandeep Singh, had been in contact with Pakistani smugglers across the border for the past six years. His arrest is being hailed as a key breakthrough, leading to the collapse of a major smuggling network operating along the India-Pakistan border.
An FIR under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Islamabad.
In a tweet, the DGP reaffirmed the force’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace from the state:
"@PunjabPoliceInd remains committed to dismantling drug syndicates, disrupting cross-border narco routes, and ensuring a drug-free Punjab."
The operation underscores the Punjab Police's intensified efforts to clamp down on transnational drug cartels operating in the region.
This successful operation is part of a broader, state-wide effort spearheaded by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to create a drug-free Punjab. The Mann government has consistently emphasized zero tolerance towards narcotics and has empowered law enforcement agencies with the tools and autonomy needed to dismantle trafficking networks, big or small.
In recent months, Punjab Police has intensified surveillance in border districts, deployed anti-drone technology, and launched intelligence-led operations to strike at the root of supply chains. Officials suggest that cross-border smuggling routes are being mapped and choked off to prevent the inflow of narcotics into the state.
